DOUBLE PAN BALANCE/SCALE

Model No:GIC-646

The double pan balance, also known as a double beam balance or a two-pan balance, is a classic and precise instrument used for measuring the mass of objects with high accuracy. Its design has been in use for centuries and is still relevant in various fields, including science, industry, and education. In this article, we will explore the double pan balance, its components, how it works, and its practical applications

Components of a Double Pan Balance/Scale

Base: The double pan balance typically rests on a stable base. This base provides support and stability to the instrument.

Main Beam: The main beam is a horizontal bar that extends from the base to the top of the balance. It serves as the central support structure for the balance.

Two Pans: At the ends of the main beam, you'll find two pans, each suspended by a hook. These pans are where you place the objects you want to measure.

Pointer and Scale: A pointer is attached to the main beam. It moves along a graduated scale that's usually marked in units of mass, such as grams or milligrams. The scale allows you to read the mass of the objects being weighed.

Adjustment Knobs: Double pan balances often have adjustment knobs that allow for fine-tuning and leveling to ensure accurate measurements.

How a Double Pan Balance Works

The principle behind a double pan balance is based on the law of equilibrium, which states that the sum of the moments (torques) on both sides of the balance is equal when it is in equilibrium. When you place an object in one pan, the balance tips, and the pointer moves along the scale. To achieve equilibrium and accurately measure the object's mass, you must add weights to the other pan until the pointer returns to its zero position.

To use a double pan balance, follow these steps:

Ensure the balance is on a level surface.

Adjust the balance using the leveling knobs to make sure it is perfectly level.

Place an object in one pan and add weights to the other until the pointer is at zero.
